I cannot attach a document or picture to e mails. It has worked in the past but now it will not happen. Help.?

I have previously been able to click on the document, click on e mail the selected document (or picture) and the Outlook Express has appeared with it attached. I then add the text and send. Suddenly it has stopped working. Windows XP operating system.
