Diablo 2 error when trying to run?

I have installed diablo 2 successfully with the LoD pack, and when I click on the shortcut for Diablo 2- Lords of Destruction, it comes up with a message that says (exactly this) "??????II??????????????? ?????????????II????????????????,????????… I am understandably quite confused about this particular error message. I have Windows XP and a 6600 GT Nvidia card. Can anybody figure out what is going on? I have a illegal copy of it if that is a problem?
