How to run a Quantum DLT4000 on Windows xp?

My father just dug out an old Quantum DLT4000 tape drive and some tapes to use with it and we have an Windows xp machine with the right SCSI connector to use it on. We found the driver software and Windows can see the device under the device manager but we cannot figure out how to operate it. Someone suggested to someone else in a similar circumstance that you need enterprise or server software to use these types of tape drives to work but we do not own a business in order to even get a trial. Does anyone know of any good software or work around for either Windows XP or Ubuntu Linux that will allow us to try it out or perhaps use it into the future without a high cost software?
